Mount Canobolas State Recreation Area

Here on Mount Canobolas you're standing on the remnants of an extinct volcano that experienced a series of eruptions some 13-11 million years ago.
Lava flows from the volcano formed the steep features and volcanic domes that today stand out above the surrounding landscape.
At 1397m above sea level, Mount Canobolas is the highest peak on a line between Sydney and Perth.
By forcing air to rise over it, Mount Canobolas cools the prevailing winds which causes moisture in them to condense out as clouds, mist and rain.
This moisture in tum Supports the growth offine subalpine forests that are home to a range of native wildlife whose habitat has elsewhere been significantly disturbed across the region. It also underpins the prosperity of the extensive agricultural and timber production activities undertaken around the foothills of the mountain outside of the State conservation area.

Hopetoun Falls Track
5.6 km return: moderate
Beginning here at the Federal Falls Camping Area, follow the Federal Falls Walking Track until you reach the signposted turnoff to Hopetoun Falls. This track will take you through a variety of Vegetation communities where you will find snow gums {Eucalyptus pauciflora), snow grass {Poa sieberiana), and Canobolas candlebark (E. canobolensis).
After going a distance through the bush the track comes to a Clearing that looks over a mountain stream. Keep an eye out for kangaroos, wombats and echidnas, as they have been seen in the area. Follow the trail alongside the stream until you reach the end of the track which provides a great vantage point to view the falls. The best time to view the falls is after it rains. Be careful though, parts of this track are quite narrow.
