Cape Byron Lighthouse - a beacon from the past
Standing atop a precipitous cliff the prominent Cape Byron
Lighthouse, completed in 1901 is the most powerful light in
Australia with a beam visible for 27 nautical miles (50 km) and
distinctive white flash every 15 seconds.
Shining across the sea in all weathers, lighthouses were built
as navigational aids. They provided ships with a fixed point
from which they could chart their course. They helped protect
ships and sailors from dangerous headlands, bars and reefs. They
aided the rapid development of Australia's trade and shipping
during the nineteenth and twentieth Century.
